A veteran of the theatre scene, Jan began her studies under the prolific Sheri Grace Wenger, founder and artistic director of Midtown/Sheri Grace Productions, at the age of eleven. She continued her studies, working with Lou White—formerly of Charleston Guerilla Theatre—and Robin Farmer, and also attending classes at Amazing Stage Company at the historic Dock Street Theatre. She then was a student in Charleston Stage Company’s Supertroupe, working through the years with Charleston Stage greats such as Lori Carrol and Marybeth Clark. Jan also worked with well-known talent Robert Ivey on a number of musical productions.
Working with the Fort Johnson players for four years, Jan performed in a number of musical productions under the direction of Arleen Stewart. Some of her roles included Nancy in Oliver!, Mother Superior in The Sound of Music, and Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls. During this time, Jan also appeared onstage in Charleston Stage Company’s productions of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever and Anything Goes!, directed by founder and producing artistic director Julian Wiles. She also attended the Firespark! program at Brenau University for two years, studying drama, as well as receiving classical vocal training under Dr. Michelle Rouche.
Throughout her college career in the Theatre and Psychology programs at the College of Charleston, Jan remained very active in the local theatre scene, working with Charleston Stage Company, The Actor's Theatre of South Carolina, and Footlight players. She also performed in Mainstage and Centerstage productions at CofC, as well as the summer Shakespeare Project. During this time, Jan also began working in other realms of the theatre, including directing, stage management and props management. Graduating in May of 2004, Jan received her B.A. in Theatre and B.S. in Psychology from the College of Charleston and continued to perform in the local theatre community. She participated in No Shame Theatre during Piccolo Spoleto in 2004 and 2005, working with co-creator Todd Ristau and No Shame veteran Jeff Goode and developing some of her own material for performance. She also continued to work with a number of companies, including The Village Playhouse, The Company Company, Theatre /Verv/, Little City Musical Theatre, as well as Pure Theatre and What If? Productions.
Aside from theatre, Jan studied voice with June Bonner at the Vocal Studio starting in 1995. With over fifteen years of study, Jan is classically trained and has worked extensively in musical theatre, also receiving coaching from Ken Clifton, former resident musical director of Riverside Theatre in Vero Beach, FL and who has coached such vocal talents as John Tartaglia and Jennifer Hudson.
Having relocated to San Francisco, Jan has worked with Round Belly Theatre in the East Bay, performed with Tony and Tina's Wedding, SF Dinner Detective, Woman's Will, SF Olympians Festival, Killing My Lobster, Urban Table city farmers' markets, Pianofight happy hours, TheatrePub, Pint Sized, Short-Lived, Chardonnay, Thunderbird, and more. Jan is an experienced actor, director, and instructor and is absolutely always willing to make a fool of herself onstage if it'll make someone smile.
More recently, Jan figured it was time to quiet her parents down a bit and use those two degrees for...something different? A graduate of the MA program in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Drama Therapy at California Institute of Integral Studies, Jan currently works as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist and Provisionally Registered Drama Therapist. Get in touch if you'd like your ear talked off about the healing power of theatre (and no, you don't have to 'perform' to heal!).
